Uber customers will now be able to request an electric vehicle for the first time as the ride-hailing app looks to become fully electric by 2025.
Launching today Uber Green will give passengers in Zone 1 the opportunity to request an electric vehicle at no extra cost.
The journey will cost the same as a regular UberX journey on the app and drivers will receive a higher fare per trip.
There is no cheaper way to generate electricity today than with the sun. Power plants are currently under construction in sunny locations that will supply solar electricity for less than 2 cents per kilowatt hour. Solar cells available on the market based on crystalline silicon make this possible with efficiencies of up to 23 percent. Therefore they hold a global market share of around 95 percent. With even higher efficiencies of more than 26 percent, costs could fall further. An international working group led by photovoltaics researchers from Forschungszentrum JĂŒlich now plan to reach this goal with a nanostructured, transparent material for the front of solar cells and a sophisticated design. The scientists report on their success of many years of research in the renowned scientific journal Nature Energy.
Silicon solar cells have been steadily improved over the past decades and have already reached a very high level of development. However, the disturbing effect of recombination still occurs after the absorption of sunlight and the photovoltaic generation of electrical charge carriers. In this process, negative and positive charge carriers that have already been generated combine and cancel each other out before they could be used for the flow of solar electricity. This effect can be countered by special materials that have a special propertyâpassivation.
âOur nanostructured layers offer precisely this desired passivation,â says Malte Köhler, former Ph.D. student and first author from the JĂŒlich Institute for Energy and Climate Research (IEK-5), who has since received his doctorate. In addition, the ultra-thin layers are transparentâso the incidence of light is hardly reducedâand exhibit high electrical conductivity.
The new technique, which can easily be added to current membrane-based electrodialysis desalination processes, removes nearly 100% of these toxic metals, producing a pure brine along with pure water and isolating the valuable metals for later use or disposal.
University of California, Berkeley, chemists have discovered a way to simplify the removal of toxic metals. like mercury and boron. during desalination to produce clean water, while at the same time potentially capturing valuable metals, such as gold.
The lab-grown meat product âincorporates muscle and fat similar to its slaughtered counterpartâ, the firm says.
The fortunes of the founders and senior management of carmakers listing in Shanghai rest on investorsâ continuing love of NEV stocks as they cannot sell their shares during a lock-up period on the Star Market for several years. The 500-per cent surge in Teslaâs share price has propelled chief executive Elon Musk to become the worldâs wealthiest man last month, beating fellow centibillionaire Jeff Bezos of Amazon.com. Here are some of the biggest upcoming fundraising drives and new entrants to watch in the industry in the coming months:

The waterless toilet was developed by Cranfield University.
The toilet was developed for use in countries that doesnât have running water.
This toilet doesnât smell which is a result of multiple actions that go on beneath the toilet once the lid is closed.
âA set of gears within the toilet are turned when the lid is closed, these gears rotate the basin where the fecal delight was deposited.
âThe waste falls into a holding chamber where a swipe blade wipes the inside of the holding basin.
âThe solids drop down to the bottom, and the liquid floats to the top.
âAn archimedes screw carries the waste upwards where it gets rolled into pellets that drop into a combustor and are burned.
âThe combustor on the toilet will be on all the time but will require an initial source of power to get it going. The team had an initial idea of attaching a hand crank or a bicycle to generate the power needed but recently scrapped that idea. A solar panel could be installed above the toilet but that wouldnât be very cost effective. The team has other ideas they are still working through to solve this issue.
âThe poop ash that is accumulated from the combustor needs to be removed once a week.
âThe liquid floats through a set of pipes that are above the combustor.
âThe liquid is heated and passed through a set of 4 membrane bundles that purifies the water.
âThis purified water drips down to the bottom where it travels to and is stored in the front step of the toilet.
âThis water while purified isnât clean enough to drink but it can be used in the garden to grow plants as well as for cleaning.
âThis waterless toilet needs to be serviced every 3 months, the 4 membranes need to be replaced to continue to purify the water.
âSo now you have the full overview of this toilet what problems do you guys foresee with this invention?
âThe only thing Iâm going to say is that Iâm sure the swipe blade will wipe most of the poop out of the holding basin, you know thereâs gonna be some nasty skip marks in there.
In reality though places in the world where people have real struggles in life, a skip mark isnât one of them.

The âForze VIIIâ, a hydrogen-electric Le Mans style prototype, became the first-ever hydrogen-electric vehicle to beat petrol-powered cars in an official race.
The car, that was designed, built, tested and raced by a group of students from Delft University of Technology, finished second in the Supercar Challenge at the TT Circuit in Assen, the Netherlands.
In a field of 43 petrol-powered race cars, the pink race car started the last race of the weekend from the fourth position. After a strong start, the car climbed quickly from fourth to second in its class. Within a few laps, driver Leo van der Eijk had already built up a 15-second gap between him and the third position. The team was able to keep up the pace for the rest of the race and secured a podium position. âWeâre incredibly proud of what we have accomplished today. Never before did a hydrogen-electric race car beat other cars in an official competition â let alone the kind of petrol-powered race cars we were racing against today. This podium finish is the result of not just one year, but twelve years of dedication, faith and hard work. Being a student team makes it feel almost unreal to be the first to ever accomplish thisâ says Zhi Wei Cai, Team Manager.
