Saudi’s new friend.

Once termed by Napoleon Bonaparte as the “sleeping giant,” China has now woken up and is living up to his prophecy: “The giant sleeps, and let it, for should it wake the world will shake.” China has now woken up and is shaking the world.

For 500 years China did little. While it was rich in resources it was plundered by the European powers. After the Maoist revolution, it began a process of unification and then focused on production. Many experiments were made including the ill-fated “cultural revolution.” But the Chinese determination for achieving parity on a world scale paid off. In the initial growing process, they were described as the “yellow pencil” and what not, but they persevered. And it was American President Richard Nixon who had to go to China in 1972 to meet Chairman Mao Zedong and establish relations that admitted China to the world stage.

Saudi Arabia established diplomatic relations with China in 1990 and from that day onward, economic relations were being cemented. China became an important oil importer. However, the significance of this relation zoomed every year with the Chinese’s capacity to excel in business and industry.

Bloomberg Businessweek alleges that Page has invested more than $100 million of his own personal funds into a flying car company since they started in 2010 and is currently funding another flying car startup.

You know how, when you’re stuck in traffic, you wish that you could pull a secret lever in your car that would make it shoot up in the air, fly you out of the congested street, and quickly whisk you to your meeting—where you are, of course, a corporate (and punctual) hero?

Well, it seems Google cofounder Larry Page may have been thinking the same thing. Bloomberg Businessweek claims that Page secretly owns a startup named Zee. Aero, a company that has been so evasive that employees were allegedly given cards with instructions on how to deflect reporters.

Self printed, self healing houses now possible.

Disrupted Commentary.

We’ve been writing about the positive disruption potentially caused by 3D printing since we started this blog in 2014. The key to making it commercial viable has been materials science developments and such is the rate of advance 3D printing is now being used to print car parts. Now we’re moving into materials science that allows self healing buildings – from 3dprint; “Magic is a recurring thing in the 3D printing industry. It’s quite challenging—and exhilarating all at once—the first time you put one of the machines into action for yourself, watching a project go from start to finish. To see that you can decide on something you want, and then have it appear in front of you is startling, euphoria-inducing, and downright addicting. Add to that the sheer simplicity of how it all works, and the brain is further boggled. But none of this compares to the true magic of this technology—all emanating from human minds.

European Commission Vice -President Andrus Ansip, responsible for the Digital Single Market, and Commissioner Günther H. Oettinger, in charge of the Digital Economy and Society, welcome today’s publication of guidelines on EU net neutrality rules by the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC). The publication of these guidelines was foreseen in the Regulation on the first EU-wide net neutrality rules which was agreed by the European Parliament and Council last year (press release) and which has applied in all EU Member States since 30 April 2016. The Commission has worked closely with BEREC on the preparation of the guidelines.

Vice-President Ansip and Commissioner Oettinger said:

“Today’s guidelines provide detailed guidance for the consistent application of our net neutrality rules by national regulators across the EU. They do not alter the content of the rules in place which guarantee the freedom of the internet by protecting the right of every European to access internet content, applications and services without unjustified interference or discrimination. Our rules, and today’s guidelines, avoid fragmentation in the single market, create legal certainty for businesses and make it easier for them to work across border. They also ensure that the internet remains an engine for innovation and that advanced technologies and Internet of Things services like connected vehicles as well as 5G applications are developed today, and will flourish in the future. We are pleased with the intensive engagement with stakeholders in the preparation of the guidelines, which contributed to their quality.

Look at these cases one by one and you will see differences in strategy and tactics. While Antioco changed his business strategy, McChrystal transformed his culture. The Route 128 companies sought proprietary competitive advantage, while Silicon Valley companies fed into an open industrial ecosystem. Occupy chose angry rhetoric, while Otpor chose street pranks.

Yet when taken collectively, a different picture emerges. Antioco, the Route 128 firms and Occupy saw hierarchies and framed the challenges they faced in terms of strategy and tactics. McChrystal, the Silicon Valley firms and Otpor, on the other hand, saw networks to integrate with and that made all the difference. What you see determines how you will act.

McChrystal saw that, “to defeat a network, you must become a network.” Silicon Valley saw an ecosystem that needed to be fed. Otpor set out to identify pillars of power— not to knock them out, but to draw them in. So for them, every arrest was a chance to win converts at the police station and those converts, in the end, were what proved to be decisive.
